Double Eyelid Surgery for a Youthful Eye Look
At SoonPlus Plastic Surgery in Seocho-gu, Seoul, we often describe the double eyelid as the finishing stroke in a painting—it defines, balances, and brings the entire composition to life. For many patients, the creation of a natural crease above the eye transforms not just how they look, but how they feel about themselves: more awake, more confident, and more harmonious.
Double eyelid surgery, known medically as Asian blepharoplasty, is the most commonly performed aesthetic procedure in South Korea—and for good reason. It doesn’t radically change the face. Instead, it highlights what’s already there, refining the upper eyelid to produce a youthful, more expressive gaze. At SoonPlus, our mission is to preserve individual identity while gently enhancing it, with every crease designed to match your facial proportions and personal aesthetic goals.
One of the most noticeable effects of double eyelid surgery is the way it opens the eyes. In individuals with a single eyelid fold (monolid), the upper eyelid can appear heavier or closed-off, often giving a tired or sleepy expression. By carefully adding a crease, we create a “window” effect, where more of the iris is visible and light reflects more dynamically off the eye surface. This change can make a person look immediately more refreshed, alert, and youthful.
There’s a common misconception that double eyelid surgery is about Westernizing the face. At SoonPlus, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Our approach is deeply rooted in the natural anatomy of the Asian eyelid. The goal is not to erase heritage—but to create subtle definition that complements the patient’s existing features. Whether you prefer a parallel fold or a tapered crease, our surgeons tailor the result to your unique eyelid thickness, brow height, and eye shape.
In facial aesthetics, harmony is everything. The eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead form a visual triangle that greatly influences expression and balance. A well-designed eyelid crease can enhance this triangle, smoothing transitions and restoring symmetry between both eyes. For many of our patients, especially those with mild asymmetry or uneven folds, the result is not just cosmetic—it’s psychological.
There’s no single technique that suits everyone. At SoonPlus, we use three main approaches, depending on the patient’s anatomy, goals, and lifestyle.
This is ideal for individuals with thin eyelid skin, minimal fat, and good elasticity. The procedure involves placing fine sutures under the skin through tiny punctures. There is no external incision, which means recovery is quick and scarring is minimal. However, the result may be less durable if the eyelid structure is not optimal.
For patients with thicker eyelids, excess skin, or fat, the incisional method allows for precise sculpting. The surgeon creates a discreet incision through which fat or muscle can be adjusted, and the crease is then anchored at the appropriate height. The incision is placed along the natural crease line, making it nearly invisible once healed. This technique produces long-lasting and highly natural results.
In certain cases, a combination of both methods yields the best results. This might involve a partial incision with strategic suture fixation to reduce trauma while increasing crease stability. Our surgeons often recommend this for patients who want minimal downtime but also long-term results.
Aging affects the eyelids earlier than many other facial areas. As we grow older, the skin above the eye thins and starts to droop. In monolids, this can cause an even more pronounced hooding effect. By creating or redefining the eyelid crease, we counteract that downward pull. The result is an eye that looks energized and expressive, even without makeup.
Many patients also notice that their eyes look larger and more symmetrical after the procedure. This has to do with both the physical changes and the optical illusion of a well-defined crease. It frames the eye like a subtle contour, lifting the brow line and giving the upper face a light, youthful vibrance.
Choosing to undergo eyelid surgery is a deeply personal decision. That’s why our consultation process is designed to be both medically thorough and emotionally supportive. During your first visit, your surgeon will:
Assess your eyelid anatomy, including muscle activity, skin thickness, and brow position
Review your medical history and any previous surgeries
Use digital simulations to preview different crease styles and heights
Discuss your lifestyle, healing expectations, and aesthetic goals
We don’t rush. Every crease we design is based on detailed measurements and an understanding of the patient’s long-term vision—not short-term trends.
Whether you undergo the incisional or non-incisional method, you can expect some swelling, tightness, and mild bruising around the eyes. Cold compresses and eye drops will be prescribed to minimize discomfort and speed healing. For most patients, downtime is about 3 to 5 days for initial recovery, and around 10 to 14 days for swelling to noticeably subside.
If an incision is used, stitches are typically removed on day 4 or 5. Scar lines are hidden within the crease, and we provide special creams and aftercare treatments (including LED therapy, if needed) to help them fade quickly. Over time, the crease softens and looks entirely natural—even under close inspection.
Most patients return to work or school within 7 to 10 days. Makeup can usually be applied after the second week, depending on the healing rate. The final results may take up to 2 to 3 months to fully settle, but you’ll notice a significant improvement much sooner.
To be honest, many patients are surprised by just how much of a difference this small crease makes in their daily life. It’s not only about looking better in photos or feeling more polished—it’s about regaining control over your expression. When your eyes communicate clarity and energy, your entire presence shifts. People often comment that patients look “more rested” or “more engaged,” without knowing what’s changed.
At SoonPlus, we’ve worked with everyone from students and professionals to actors and CEOs. One thing they all share? A desire to feel more like themselves—clearer, brighter, and in alignment with how they see themselves inside.
Some of our patients come to us after having double eyelid surgery elsewhere. Common concerns include uneven creases, overly high folds, or visible scarring. Revision blepharoplasty is one of our specialties at SoonPlus, and it requires advanced skill and delicate planning.
Because the tissue has already been altered, revision work must be approached with extra care. Scar tissue, asymmetry, and tension in the eyelid muscle all affect the surgical plan. That’s why our surgeons use 3D analysis and meticulous design to restore balance—while preserving as much natural anatomy as possible.
Here are a few indicators that double eyelid surgery might be a good fit:
You have a monolid or low fold that makes your eyes appear smaller or tired
You want a more defined upper eyelid crease to help with makeup application
You experience asymmetry or uneven eyelid folds
You’ve used eyelid tape for years and want a permanent, natural solution
You seek subtle rejuvenation without drastically changing your appearance
Of course, not everyone is a candidate. If you have certain eye conditions, dry eye syndrome, or systemic medical issues, our team will evaluate those carefully and suggest the safest course of action.
Double eyelid surgery isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about refining what’s already beautiful—bringing clarity to your gaze, structure to your eyelid, and symmetry to your face. At SoonPlus Plastic Surgery, we view every procedure as a collaboration between surgical precision and personal intention.
