What to Know About Chin Augmentation Surgery
In medical terms, chin augmentation (also called genioplasty or mentoplasty) refers to surgical procedures designed to alter the shape, size, or projection of the chin in order to improve facial harmony.
There are two broad approaches:
A weak or receding chin (microgenia) or an overly prominent one can disrupt facial harmony. A well-contoured chin complements your nose, forehead, and jawline, creating a more cohesive silhouette. Patients are often surprised at how much their profile improves with a subtle chin adjustment.
An under-projected chin can make the neck appear less defined and the lower face less structured. Augmentation improves the cervicomental angle—the transition between the chin and neck—creating a cleaner, more youthful outline.
The first step is a detailed consultation and facial assessment:
We use advanced imaging, including 3D-CT, to analyze bone structure, tissue volume, and facial symmetry.
We check your bite (occlusion), jaw function, and TMJ health to ensure that chin augmentation is appropriate.
Using simulation software, we help you visualize potential changes and discuss what would look proportionate and natural on your face.
We set realistic expectations based on your anatomy and lifestyle.
This comprehensive planning ensures that the procedure is not only safe but also aesthetically successful. One thing many patients don’t realize is that chin augmentation can also improve soft tissue tension in the neck, leading to a crisper, more youthful jawline.
Typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
A small incision is made inside the mouth (intraoral) or beneath the chin.
A customized implant is inserted into a precise pocket over the chin bone and positioned securely.
Incisions are closed with fine sutures.
The key advantage of implants is minimal bone manipulation. Recovery is often faster, and results are immediately visible. However, proper sizing and placement are crucial to avoid an unnatural look.
Conducted entirely through an intraoral incision.
The surgeon cuts the chin bone, repositions it forward, backward, or vertically, and fixes it with mini-plates or screws.
Because no foreign material is used, the results are fully integrated with your natural anatomy.
This method allows more versatile adjustments and tends to offer a more natural feel. It is particularly suited for patients needing not just projection but also vertical height or correction of asymmetry.
Implant surgery typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours.
Sliding genioplasty may take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on complexity.
Most patients are discharged the same day, though some may require a short hospital stay for monitoring.
Swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort are normal. Ice compresses and sleeping with the head elevated help minimize swelling.
Oral hygiene is important if the incision is intraoral. We guide patients with specific rinses and techniques.
A soft diet is recommended to avoid pressure on the surgical site.
Light activity is fine, but avoid heavy lifting or bending forward.
Bruising fades, swelling continues to decrease.
Most patients feel confident returning to social activities within 2 weeks, though final contour takes longer to stabilize.
Gradual resumption of normal activities, including gentle exercise, is encouraged.
Implants typically settle within 6 weeks and become well-integrated.
Bone healing in sliding genioplasty continues over several months.
Follow-up imaging and in-person evaluations help ensure proper healing and symmetry.
We advise patients on how to maintain results through posture, skincare, and weight stability.
Infection, particularly with implants.
Implant shift or extrusion (rare with proper technique).
Numbness or altered sensation in the lower lip or chin (usually temporary).
Asymmetry, dissatisfaction with shape or size.
Bone resorption under the implant in long-term cases.
Chin augmentation can address skeletal deficiency but not functional jaw issues. If your concern is due to dental misalignment, orthognathic surgery may be required.
Non-surgical alternatives like fillers can offer temporary improvement but do not correct bone structure or last as long.
Over-correction can result in an unnatural or masculinized appearance—we guide patients toward proportional enhancements.

You value a natural look that enhances overall balance.
You may need further consultation if:
You have jaw misalignment or need orthognathic surgery.
You expect extreme or dramatic changes.
